Surnames Surnames across time can indicate when a family arrived in or departed a region. Families may have grown and prospered, emigrated en masse or simply "died out" leaving no one with that surname. In the case of Nassau County, families often moved back and forth across the St Mary's River, into Camden County, Georgia. Currently we have collected about 7500 names on this website, including 2354 surnames. Keep in mind that some of the records are for the same individual - for example, a child in the 1850 census might have been included in the later marriage index and then in the cemetery index. The Top 16 Surnames listed below with the totals for each family. As always, different spellings should be examined, and we have not "corrected" the data for potentially misspelled names in documents as it may have been the preferred spelling of the family at that time. We should note that the data at this time do not include the very large Bosque Bello Cemetery on Amelia Island, and only partial results of the 1895 census.
